Communication Technologies

The Communication Technologies major provides a comprehensive program for students. We offer emphases in broadcast production, imaging media, journalism, and public relations (each student in our major selects at least one). The department also offers minors in broadcasting, imaging media, journalism, and public relations (offered for students in other majors across campus).

The Broadcast Production emphasis stresses artistic endeavors and content development for radio and television programming. Graduates pursue careers in news and sports reporting, video editing, videography, and radio show hosting. A Broadcasting minor is offered in the department. Students in the emphasis and related minor are often found working for WSUP 91 FM, TV 5, and the Wisconsin Badger Camp Telethon.

Imaging Media emphasis is a creative and dynamic approach to the technologies that shape how we communicate visually. Graduates of the program develop careers in computer graphics, multimedia, printing, photography, desktop publishing, and web site development. An Imaging Media minor is offered for students interested primarily in graphic and interactive design for commercial purposes. Students in the emphasis and related minor are often attracted to opportunities provided by the Imaging Media Group.

Journalism emphasis has a long and proud history in the U.S. and this program sustains our traditional approach to news/editorial journalism. Graduates of the program have careers in editing, reporting, publishing, advertising, and desktop publishing. A related Journalism minor attracts students from other majors with an interest in writing for publication. Students in the communication technologies major, the journalism minor, and other majors across campus are encouraged to participate in the Exponent, our campus newspaper.

Public Relations emphasis students study persuasive messages, with a focus on reputation creation and management. The program leads to careers in meeting and event planning, public relations management, association management, crisis management, and other opportunities. A Public Relations minor is also offered. Our public relations students have developed a student organization known as PRO (Public Relations Organization).
