TEACHING PHILOSOPHY & INTEREST

Teaching Philosohpy

From diverse teaching experiences, I have been able to develop a teaching philosophy: I strongly believe Individuality, Mutual Respect, and Artistry.  These elements are necessary for both private and group teaching and should be applied to every level of instruction.

An ideal teacher has to be open-minded while working with students. While the student needs to respect the teaching ideas, it is equally important that the teacher is open and flexible to students’ opinions and issues around them. Since each student has different problems and pedagogical issues that need to be addressed, the teacher should make every effort to make the adjustment. At the beginning of each semester, I encourage students to discuss course expectations as well as suggestions for the course.  This provides me with substantial ideas individualizing the curriculum to best, meet the needs of the students.

No one can be a good teacher without being patient and considerate.  Being an artistic performer does not necessarily mean one is a good teacher.  Teachers should make sure that students fully comprehend their instructions.  If students do not respond to the given approach, teachers should find a more meaningful and personal way to communicate with the students.

The relationship between teachers and students should reflect mutual respect and concern.  If a student feels intimidated during the lesson or class, he or she will be unable to express their ideas.  The student cannot improve under these circumstances.  Teachers should care for their students and personally approach them.  Private lessons allow me to take a personal interest in each student, which has provided me with many helpful teaching clues.  The ultimate goal of my teaching is to help students achieve their highest potential and develop their individual artistry.  With proper guidance, a student will be able to express their individual interpretations and artistic vision.

Teaching Interest

I have been flexible to teach students from beginners to major students and in most cases, I get such an inspiration from my hard working students that has helped me shape my educational vision.

I have such a broad range of teaching interest and I believe my B.M. in Piano Performance, M.M. in Piano Performance, and D.M.A. in Piano Performance & Pedagogy with Minors in Music History and Music Theory qualify me to teach such classes as the following:

Class Piano
Applied Piano
Pedagogy
Music Theory
Music History
Music Appreciation

My mom, a soprano who won a national competition in South Korea and highschool teacher before her marriage, used to give private lessons in piano to neighborhood kids. From that influence, I began playing at the age of 18 months and eventually decided to devote myself to music at very early age. In my whole life, I have been very close to music education and have witnessed how music shapes people heart, attitude, and their life, eventually. Thus, I am an advocate of music education and willing to work with anyone who finds interest in music.
